MY FOOLISH HEART

Music: Victor Young- Lyrics: Ned Washington

Year: 1949

Origin of the song

The compositor Victor Young was the author of My Foolish Heart film’s score, which premiered on 25 December 1949 in Los Angeles, California. It was directed by Mark Robson, with Dana Andrews, Susan Hayward and Ken Smith as the main roles. ‘My Foolish Heart’, with Ned Washington’s lyrics, and interpreted by Martha Mears, was the background theme during the credits and was nominated to the Oscar for Best Song. It was an immediate popular success and, in just three months, six versions of the song got into the hit charts.

Young began to write music for films since he arrived in Hollywood in 1935. Besides, he developed other works such as directing and making arrangements for his own orchestra, acting on the radio or accompanying a big number of great singers at the recording studios. When he died in 1956 at the age of fifty six (according to his relatives it was due to his obsessive eagerness to work hard), the singer and piano player Nat King Cole paid homage to him on his TV show performing some of his songs, among them ‘My Foolish Heart’.

Young and Washington had been collaborating for a long while and created some big successes such as ‘Can’t We Talk It Over’ (1932), ‘Love Me’ (1934) or ‘Stella by Starlight’ (1946).
