Origin of the song

The musical Great Day premiered on 17 October 1929 in the Cosmopolitan Theatre in New York. The script was William Carey Duncan’s and John Wells’, music by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Billy Rose and Edward Eliscu. In the first act, the actress Mayo Methot (who later would marry Humphrey Bogart) sang ‘More Than You Know’. The play turned out to be a failure (it was removed from the billboard after thirty six performances), but three of their songs became very popular a few weeks after finishing the show.

Despite its failure in Broadway, the disc and score sales success inspired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to buy the rights of the play. The film was planned to be released in 1930, with Joan Crawford as the leading role, but the project was called off before the filming began due to problems with the actress. Years later, in 1955, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made the cinema version of the musical with the title Hit the Deck. It was directed by Roy Rowland and Jane Powell, Tony Martin, Debbie Reynolds, Walter Pidgeon, Vic Damone and Ann Miller were the stars. On the film, which wasn’t released in Spain, Tony Martin and Ann Miller performed ‘More Than You Know’.
