Origin of the song

Evelyn Herbert sang ‘Lover Come Back to Me’ on 19 September 1928, date of the premiere of the musical The New Moon in the Imperial Theatre of Broadway; Robert Halliday performed it again in the final scene of the show, which was performed five hundred nine times. The song was a big success and, shortly, four versions of it appeared among the top ten in the charts. Another popular theme from the musical was ‘Softly As in a Morning Sunrise’.

‘Lover Come Back to Me’ is one of the most loved songs for Romberg, even if it wasn’t the most original one, because, in its central part, it is clearly inspired by a piano piece of Tchaikovsky.

On 17 January 1931, a first film version of the musical, named New Moon, directed by Jack Conway in which first Lawrence Tibbett and later Grace Moore performed ‘Lover Come Back to Me’. Years later, on 28 June 1940, a second and more famous version was released, New Moon, in which Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy sang ‘Lover Come Back to Me’.

Other Romberg’s musicals are Maytime (1917), Blossom Time (1921), The Student Prince (1924), Princess Flavia (1925), The Desert Song (1926), and Rosalie (1928), this last one was a collaboration with George Gershwin.
