Origin of the song

The actor and singer Kenny Baker performed for the first time ‘Love Is Here to Stay’ in the film Goldwyn Follies, produced by Samuel Goldwyn, directed by George Marshall and starring Adolphe Menjou, Andrea Leeds, Vera Zorina, and The Ritz Brothers, which was released in Miami, Florida, on 28 January 1938. In the film little importance was given to the song and it was almost set aside to background music, with the performance of Baker mainly covered by the dialogue.

Despite its treatment on screen, ‘Love Is Here to Stay’ entered the hit charts twice, once performed by Larry Clinton and the other by Red Norvo. Nevertheless, it didn’t become a standard until Gene Kelly sang it in An American in Paris (1951).

Ira Gershwin tells that him and George finished five songs in little time for The Goldwyn Follies: ‘I Was Doing All Right’, ‘Love Walked In’, ‘Love to Rhyme’ and ‘Love Is Here to Stay’. The fifth song was ‘Just Another Rhumba’, which wasn’t used in the film. Those were also the last weeks of work of George Gershwin before his death, on 11 July 1937, and ‘Love Is Here to Stay’ was the last song he wrote.
