Origin of the song

On 23 May 1945 the musical film Thrill of a Romance was released in the US, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, directed by Richard Thorpe, and starring Van Johnson, Esther Williams, Frances Gifford, Henry Travers, and Spring Byington. The singer Bob Allen, with Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra, performed ‘I Should Care’.

The reviews were mostly negative. They branded the film as tacky and sickeningly sweet, saying that going watch it was a waste of time and money; but the song immediately became a hit. Four versions entered the top charts the same year of the premiere, among which Frank Sinatra’s stands out, which reached the eighth position.

Stordahl, Weston, and Sammy Cahn (this time just as songwriter) remade the song the following year with ‘Day By Day’. Cahn was nominated to the Oscar twenty six times during his career, which he won four times: ‘Three Coins in the Fountain’ (1954), ‘All the Way’ (1957), ‘High Hopes’ (1959), and ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ (1963).
