Origin of the song

The song ‘I Remember You’ belongs to the film The Fleet’s In´s soundtrack, produced by Paramount Pictures, directed by Victor Schertzinger and starring Dorothy Lamour, William Holden, and Eddie Bracken. It was released on 24 January 1942 in the US and, in the film, Jimmy Dorsey’s orchestra and the singers Helen O’Connell and Bob Eberly’s performance stood out.

Victor Schertzinger was a man with many talents, in the field of music as well as the cinematographic arts. For The Fleet’s In (which would be his last film), he associated the songwriter Johnny Mercer and they wrote ‘I Remember You’, ‘Tangerine’, and ‘Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry’, which became Jimmy Dorsey’s band’s great hits.

Johnny Mercer and Judy Garland had sporadic love affairs, even if both were married. Many Mercer’s songs were clearly inspired by Garland, ‘Skylark’, ‘That Old Black Magic’, and ‘I Remember You’ among them.

Other Schertzinger’s songs that became very popular are: ‘Paris, Stay the Same’ (1929), ‘Dream Lover’ (1929), ‘Close to Me’ (1931), ‘One Night of Love’ (1934), ‘Love Me Forever’ (1934), ‘The Moon and the Willow Tree’ (1940), ‘I Don't Want To Cry Anymore’ (1940), ‘Kiss the Boys Goodbye’ (1941), and ‘Sand in My Shoes’ (1941).
