Origin of the song

The film Ziegfeld Girl, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, directed by Robert Z. Leonard and Busby Berkeley and starring Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner, James Stewart, Tony Martin, Jackie Cooper, Eve Arden and Edward Everett Horton, premiered in the US on 25 April 1941. It was one of the biggest film hits of the season and Tony Martin sang 'You Stepped Out Of A Dream'.

Three great bands recorded this song: Glenn Miller's, with the voices of Ray Eberle and The Modernaires, Guy Lombardo's, with Carmen Lombardo as soloist, and Kay Kyser's with singer Harry Babbitt. The latter was the only version that made it into the charts and practically went unnoticed.

Nacio Herb Brown also wrote the music for ‘Should I’ (1930), ‘Temptation’ (1933), ‘All I Do Is Dream of You’ (1934) and ‘Love Is Where You Find It’ (1948). Gus Kahn wrote the lyrics of 'Pretty Baby' (1915), 'Toot, Toot, Toot, Tootsie (Goodbye)' (1921), 'It Had to Be You' (1924), 'I'll See You in My Dreams' (1924), 'Yes, Sir, That's My Baby' (1925), 'Makin' Whoopee' (1928), 'Love Me or Leave Me' (1925), and 'Love Me or Leave Me' (1928) among other songs.
