Origin of the song

The musical comedy The Boys from Syracuse premiered on 23 November 1938 at the Alvin Theatre in New York. George Abbott's libretto was based on William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, Richard Rodgers' music and Lorenz Hart's lyrics. In the first act of the play, Marcy Wescott and Eddie Albert performed 'This Can't Be Love'. This show also includes the songs 'Falling in Love With Love' and 'Sing for Your Supper'.

On 31 July 1940, the film adaptation of the work was premiered in New York, which retained the same title. It was produced by Universal Pictures, directed by Edward Sutherland and starring Allan Jones, Irene Hervey, Martha Raye and Alan Mowbray. Allan Jones sang 'This Can't Be Love' in the film, which was not shown in Spain.

Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, from 1919 until Hart’s death in 1943, collaborated in 28 theatre performances and wrote more than 500 songs. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer brought to the screen a fictitious and sweetened biography of both with the title Words and Music. It was directed by Norman Taurog and performed by Mickey Rooney (Hart) and Tom Drake (Rodgers). It premiered in New York on 9 December 1948 and was shown on television in Spain in 1985.
