Origin of the song

This song reached a small popularity in 1928 when it was recorded by Rudy Vallée & His Heigh-Ho Yale Collegians. That same year, the clarinettist Jimmie Noone, with his Apex Club Orchestra, made an instrumental version for the label Vocalion. It was also recorded by Isham Jones' orchestra (1932) and jazz violinist Joe Venuti (1933). None of them made it onto the charts.

'Sweet Lorraine', Clifford Burwell's only successful composition, played an important role in the conversion of pianist Nat Cole into a singer and in the origin of his nickname. According to the artist's biography, at first he was only interested in the song as instrumental, but in 1938, while performing at a nightclub in Los Angeles, a drunken client asked him to sing it, which Cole refused. The client insisted and the owner of the premises asked Nat to respond to his request. He agreed and the attendees liked how he sang it so much that the owner put a laurel wreath on his head and said: Nat Cole, I crown you king.

Mitchell Parish, in addition to being the author of lyrics to numerous popular songs, also triumphed as a lyricist on Broadway in several music magazines, including Continental Varieties (1935), Earl Carroll's Vanities of 1940 (1940), Bubbling Brown Sugar (1976) and Stardust (1987).
