Origin of the song

Helen O' Connell and Bob Eberly, accompanied by Jimmy Dorsey's orchestra, sang 'Star Eyes' in the musical film I Dood It. The film, which premiered in the US in September 1943, was directed by Vincente Minnelli and performed by Red Skelton and Eleanor Powell. The cast also featured Lena Horne and Hazel Scott, who appeared as themselves. It was a new version of Spite Marriage, a film directed by Edward Sedgwick and Buster Keaton in 1929.

In Minnelli's opinion, it was the worst job he ever did in his entire career. Part of the problem was that he was hired when shooting had already started and the producer did not allow him to change anything that had been filmed before. The best of the movie were the songs: 'Jericho', 'Taking A Chance On Love', 'One O' Clock Jump' and 'Star Eyes'.

Gene De Paul and Don Raye, in addition to 'Star Eyes', co-authored 'You Don't Know What Love Is' (1941) and 'I'll Remember April' (1941). The lyrics of the latter seem to be based on a poem by Patricia Johnston. For his part, De Paul is the author of the music for 'Irresistible You' (1944), 'Teach Me Tonight' (1954) and 'Namely You' (1956).
