Origin of the song

The song ‘My One and Only Love’ took a while to become a success. Its origin dates back to 1947 and at that time the name was ‘Music from Beyond the Moon’, with music by Guy B. Wood’s and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. Vic Damone (1948) and Tony Martin (1949) recorded it, but both versions went unnoticed.

Shortly after, Robert Mellin arranged the melody and wrote new lyrics. In 1953, the label Capitol included the song, with the new name, as the flip side of Frank Sinatra’s ‘He got the World on a String’ and the audience really liked it. In August of the same year it got into the hit charts and reached the twenty-eight place, although it only lasted one week.

The English compositor Robert Mellin wrote the music and the lyrics of ‘I’m Yours’ (1952) and the music of ‘Stranger on the Shore’ (1962), Mr. Acker Bilk’s worldwide hit, that reached first place in several countries such as Great Britain and the US. He was the songwriter of ‘You, You, You’ (1953), ‘My One Sin’ (1955) and ‘You Never Told Me’ (1966) and, together with Gunther Finlay, he wrote the music and the lyrics for ‘Rain (Falling from the Sky)’ (1955). For his part, Guy Wood also wrote ‘Till Then’ (1944) and ‘Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy’ (1945).
