Origin of the song

The music magazine Lew Leslie’s Blackbirds of 1930 was released on October 22 of that same year in the Royale Theatre of New York. Its authors were Flournoy Miller (script), Eubie Blake (music) and Andy Razaf (lyrics). The actor and singer Minto Cato performed ‘Memories of You’ in the already mentioned performance. Ethel Waters figured among the show’s cast, too. There were only fifty seven performances of the play.

‘Memories of You’ was the only collaboration of Blake and Razaf. The first also wrote ‘Charleston Rag’ (1899), 'Love Will Find A Way' (1921), 'I'm Just Wild About Harry' (1921) and 'Bandana Days' (1922). Meanwhile, Andy Razaf had a long and brilliant career as a songwriter, with successes such as 'Honeysuckle Rose' (1929), 'Black and Blue (What Did I Do to Be So Black and Blue)' (1929), 'Ain’t Misbehavin’' (1929), 'Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now' (1932), and 'The Joint is Jumpin’' (1940), all of them with Fats Waller. He also worked alongside with Benny Goodman, Edgar Sampson and Chick Webb in ‘Stompin’ at the Savoy’ (1936) and Joseph C. Garland in ‘In the Mood’ (1939).
