Origin of the song

Marion Davies and Lawrence Gray sang ‘Just You, Just Me’ in the film Marianne, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and directed by Robert Z. Leonard, where Cliff Edwards, George Baxter, and Benny Rubin also took part. The film, released on 24 August 1929 in the US, has moderate success, but the song became the most popular among all songs written by Jesse Greer or Raymond Klages.

Some Jeese Greer’s songs had brief popularity, as ‘Daddy Found You Down Beside the Garden Wall’ (1917), ‘Baby Blue Eyes’ (1922), ‘Flapperette’ (1926), ‘Gonna Meet My Sweetie Now’ (1926), ‘Kitty from Kansas City’ (1930), ‘When the Night Is Young’ (1931), and ‘Time to Go’ (1933). For his part, Klages wrote the lyrics of ‘Climbing Up the Ladder of Love’ (1926), ‘I’m More Than Satisfied’ (1927), and ‘One Step to Heaven’ (1928). The three of them weren’t very popular.

Cliff Edwards recorded ‘Just You, Just Me’ on 14 June 1929 for the Columbia label. The disc reached the twelfth position in the top charts. Some years later, in 1944, Lester Young got his instrumental version of the song into the ‘Rhythm & Blues’ charts in the ninth position, where it remained for a week.
