Origin of the song
On 2 August 1935 Every Night at Eight was released in the US, produced by Paramount Pictures, directed by Raoul Walsh, and starring George Raft, Alice Faye, Frances Langford, and Patsy Kelly. In the film, Frances Langford sang ‘I’m in the Mood for Love’ and ‘I Feel a Song Comin’ On’ were the most popular.
Every Night at Eight was practically the last time Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh collaborated. That same year, the couple wrote one more song, ‘Lovely to Look At’, which was used for the cinema version of the Broadway musical Roberta.
After the artistic breakup, McHugh composed, among others, ‘You´re a Sweetheart’ (1937), ‘Where Are You?’ (1937), ‘Couldn´t Sleep a Wink Last Night’ (1943), ‘A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening’ (1943), ‘Comin´ In on a Wing and Prayer’ (1943), ‘It´s a Most Unusual Day’ (1948), and ‘Too Young to Go Steady’ (1955).
