EV´RY TIME WE SAY GOODBYE

Music and lyrics: Cole Porter

Year: 1944

Origin of the song

On 7 December 1944, the musical Seven Lively Arts was released in the Ziegfeld Theatre of New York, produced by Billy Rose, with Moss Hart, George S. Kaufman and Ben Hecht’s libretto and music and lyrics by Cole Porter. Despite they had spared no expense, it wasn’t a great success and there were only a hundred and eighty three performances. Hassard Short directed the stage management, Anton Dolin, the choreography, and Jack Donohue, the music. The show, whose stars were Beatrice Lillie and Bert Lahr, also had music from Igor Stravinski’s ballet, scenography designed by Salvador Dalí and, among its actors, Benny Goodman, Red Norvo, and Teddy Wilson.

Only the song ‘Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye’ managed to escape the sinking, sung by Nan Wynn and Jere McMahon during the first act of the musical.

Three weeks before the premiere, on 16 November 1944, Benny Goodman, leading his quintet with the singer Peggy Mann, recorded the song for the Columbia label, the only version that entered the top charts.
