DANCING IN THE DARK

Music: Arthur Schwartz- Lyrics: Howard Dietz

Year: 1931

Origin of the song

On 3 June 1931, the musical The Band Wagon was released in the New Amsterdam Theatre of New York, with a libretto by George S. Kaufman and Howard Dietz, music by Arthur Schwartz, and lyrics by Howard Dietz. It had two hundred and sixty performances. Hassard Short directed the stage management and Albertina Rasch the choreography. The play’s stars were Adele and Fred Astaire. This was the last time they acted together.

John Baker sang ‘Dancing in the Dark’ the night of the premiere while Tillie Losch was dancing. Other songs from the show that became very popular were ‘I Love Louisa’ and ‘Nanette’.

Apart from ‘Dancing in the Dark’, Schwartz and Dietz signed together other songs that became famous, as ‘I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan’ (1929), ‘Alone Together’ (1932), ‘You and the Night and the Music’ (1934), ‘By Myself’ (1937), ‘I See Your Face Before Me’ (1937), and ‘Haunted Heart’ (1948).
