AFTER YOU´VE GONE

Music and lyrics: Henry Creamer, Turner Layton

Year: 1918

Origin of the song

Al Jonson released ‘After You’ve Gone’ in the Winter Garden Theatre of New York in 1918. That year, several artists recorded the song. Marion Harris’ version accompanied by Rosario Bourdon’s orchestra was the most popular and, on 1 February 1919, it reached the top of the charts, where it remained for three weeks.

Other compositions in which Creamer and Layton collaborated are ‘Dear Old Southland’ (1921) and ‘Way Down Yonder in New Orleans’ (1922). After their breakup in 1924, Creamer wrote the lyrics of ‘Alabama Stomp’ (1926) and ‘If I Could Be with You (One Hour Tonight)’ (1931). Layton, for his part, carried on with his career as compositor, singer, and pianist in England.

Marion Harris was one of the most popular singers of the 20s. Three songs performed by her were top of the charts: ‘St. Louis Blues’ (1920), ‘Look For The Silver Lining’ (1921), and ‘Tea For Two’ (1925). In 1944, she died in a hotel’s fire that she caused when she fell asleep while smoking in bed.
