Origen de la canción
El espectáculo musical titulado The Blackbird Revue, con música de Jimmy McHugh y letras de Dorothy Fields, se estrenó en Les Ambassadeurs Nightclub de Nueva York el 4 de enero de 1928. Como obtuvo un enorme éxito y el local se quedó pequeño, el 9 de mayo pasó al Liberty Theatre con un nuevo título, Blackbirds of 1928, donde estuvo más de un año en la cartelera. Lo produjo y dirigió Lew Leslie, y Adelaide Hall y Bill Robinson eran las estrellas del show. De entre todas sus canciones, la que obtuvo mayor éxito de crítica y público fue “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love”.
En ese mismo año, cinco versiones del tema entraron en las listas de éxitos. La de Cliff Edwards alcanzó el puesto número uno y la de The Knickerbockers, con el cantante Vaughan DeLeath, el dos.
Corren muchos rumores sobre la autoría de esta canción. Andy Razaf, habitual letrista de Fats Waller, contó a su biógrafo que Waller, siempre apurado de dinero, había vendido una canción por 500 dólares a un compositor blanco, quien la incluyó en un musical de gran éxito y obtuvo 17.500 dólares netos de derechos de autor. Parece ser que ésta era una práctica habitual de Fats. Años más tarde, a principios de los setenta, la viuda de Don Redman visitó a Razaf, que estaba en un hospital. Cuando le preguntó cuál era la canción favorita entre las que había puesto letra, la dejó asombrada cuando le susurró el estribillo de “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love”.
