Origen de la canción

Don Redman tenía múltiples talentos: arreglista, saxofonista, cantante, director de orquesta… A mediados de los años veinte, era el responsable del estilo rítmico de la orquesta de Fletcher Henderson. En 1927, pasó a ser director musical de la banda McKinney’s Cotton Pickers y en poco tiempo la convirtió en una de las más populares de Estados Unidos, en competencia con las orquestas de Henderson y Ellington.

En esa época, escribió y grabó sus tres canciones más conocidas: "Cherry" (12 de julio de 1928), "Save it Pretty Mama” (8 de abril de 1929) y “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You" (5 de noviembre de 1929). En 1931 abandonó la agrupación y formó su propia orquesta.

Otras conocidas composiciones de Redman son “Shakin’ the African” (1930) y “Hot and Anxious” (1931). Por su parte, Andy Razaf escribió las letras de “12th Street Rag” (1914), “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (1929), “Honeysuckle Rose” (1929), “Memories of You” (1930), “Keepin' Out of Mischief Now” (1932), “Stompin' at the Savoy” (1934) e “In the Mood” (1939).
