Origen de la canción
El compositor J. Fred Coots y el letrista Sam Lewis, que ya habían disfrutado anteriormente del éxito en Broadway, escribieron "For All We Know" en 1934. Morton Downey, conocido como “el zorzal irlandés”, elegido el mejor cantante masculino de la radio en 1932, la estrenó en su popular programa radiofónico. La canción triunfó en las listas de éxitos en el mismo año 1934 interpretada por las orquestas de Hal Kemp e Isham Jones, pero, a pesar de que la grabaron músicos como Kay Kyser, Guy Lombardo o Nina Simone, no volvió a las listas de popularidad hasta 1962 con la versión de Dinah Washington.
Aunque tengan el mismo título, no se debe confundir esta canción con "For All We Know", escrita por Fred Carlin, Robb Wilson y Arthur James para el film Lovers and Other Strangers (Amantes y otros extraños), que ganó el premio Oscar a la mejor canción en 1969.
Otras éxitos de J. Fred Coots son “I Still Get a Thrill (Thinking of You) (1930), “Love Letters in the Sand” (1931), “You Go to My Head” (1938) y “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” (1934). Por su parte, Sam M. Lewis es autor de la letra de “Rockabye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody” (1918), “I’m Sitting on Top of the World” (1924), “Dinah” (1925), “In a Little Spanish Town” (1930), “Street of Dreams” (1931), “Just Friends” (1931) y “Gloomy Sunday” (1936).
