Origen de la canción
El 8 de noviembre de 1932 se estrenó en el Alvin Theatre de Nueva York la obra Music in the Air, con música de Jerome Kern y libreto y letras de Oscar Hammerstein II. En el segundo, Tullio Carminati interpretó “The Song Is You”. Otra canción del espectáculo, “I've Told Ev'ry Little Star”, también se hizo muy popular. Se dieron trescientas cuarenta y dos representaciones, pero se tuvo que suspender a causa de la crisis económica causada por la Depresión y por diversos problemas con los sindicatos.
El 13 de diciembre de 1934 se estrenó en Estados Unidos la versión cinematográfica de la obra, Music in the Air (Música en el aire). La produjo Fox Film Corporation, la dirigió Joe May y fueron sus protagonistas Gloria Swanson, John Boles, Douglass Montgomery, June Lang y Reginald Owen. En el film, John Boles cantó “The Song is You”.
Entre las numerosas canciones compuestas por Kern y Hammerstein II destacan “Who” (1925), “Ol' Man River” (1927), “Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man” (1927), “Why Do I Love You?” (1927), “Make Believe” (1927), “Why Was I Born” (1929), “The Folks Who Live on the Hill” (1937), “All the Things You Are” (1939) y “Nobody Else but Me” (1946).
