Origen de la canción
El cantante Cliff Edwards, conocido como “Ukulele Ike”, grabó “I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me” para el sello Perfect en enero de 1927. El disco no entró las listas de popularidad, pero sí lo hizo, en julio de ese año, la versión de la orquesta de Roger Wolfe Kahn, que alcanzó el puesto número once.
La actividad profesional de Clarence Gaskill fue bastante limitada, aunque original. Sólo compuso la música de dos espectáculos de Broadway, Earl Carroll’s Vanities (1925) y Keep It Clean (1929), ninguno de los cuales constituyó un gran éxito. También escribió las letras de algunas canciones con títulos extravagantes, como “No Squat, No Stoop, No Squint”, “The Tin Can Song” o “In the Vallée of Lombardo” (un juego de palabras que utiliza los nombres del cantante Rudy Vallée y del director de orquesta Guy Lombardo). Además, escribió la que debe ser, sin duda, una de las grabaciones más surrealistas de Louis Armstrong, la titulada "Laughin’ Louis" (1933).
Gaskill colaboró con Jimmy McHugh sólo en dos ocasiones, ambas en 1926: “I Don’t Mind Being All Alone” y “I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me”, que fue su mayor éxito. También escribió dos números que triunfaron en las listas de éxitos: la letra de "Minnie the Moocher" (1931) y la música de "Prisoner of Love" (1933), en colaboración con el cantante Russ Colombo.
