Origen de la canción
Fats Waller escribió “Honeysuckle Rose” como un número de baile para la revista musical Load of Coal, que se estrenó en el Connie’s Inn de Harlem en 1929. Poco después, ya con letra de Andy Razaf, Mildred Bailey interpretó la canción en el show radiofónico de Paul Whiteman.
Connie’s Inn era un pequeño local de Harlem en el que se representaban revistas musicales y se bailaba. Ubicado en el cruce de la calle 131 con la 7th Avenue, únicamente le superó en popularidad el Cotton Club. En sus actuaciones en el local, Fats Waller alternaba con artistas de la talla de Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson o Ethel Waters.
Las grabaciones de “Honeysuckle Rose” que realizaron McKinney’s Cotton Pickers (3 de febrero de 1930) y la orquesta de Frankie Trumbauer (24 de junio de 1931) no lograron que la canción se convirtiera en un éxito. Finalmente, en 1933, Fletcher Henderson consiguió que entrase en las listas de popularidad, donde permaneció durante dos semanas y alcanzó el puesto número dieciocho.
