Origen de la canción
Eddie Cantor era la estrella del musical Kid Boots, que se estrenó el 31 de diciembre de 1923 en el Earl Carroll Theatre de Nueva York y del que se dieron cuatrocientas ochenta y nueve representaciones. A la partitura original se le añadió la canción “Dinah”, que Cantor interpretó al final del espectáculo, y que entusiasmó al público.
En octubre de 1925, Ethel Waters, que había sustituído temporalmente durante el verano a la actriz Florence Mills en el Plantation Club de Broadway, grabó la canción y, para sorpresa de todos, el disco entró en las listas de popularidad y alcanzó el puesto número dos. Años más tarde, en 1932, Bing Crosby y The Mills Brothers llevaron la canción hasta el número uno de las listas de éxitos.
Harry Akst, además de “Dinah”, compuso también la música de las canciones “Home Again Blues” (1921), “Baby Face” (1926) y “Am I Blue?” (1929).
Sam M. Lewis y Joseph Young escribieron conjuntamente la letra de “Rock-a-bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody” (1918), “I’m Sitting on Top of the World” (1924) y “In a Little Spanish Town” (1930). En solitario, el primero escribió “Street of Dreams” (1931), “Just Friends” (1931), “For All We Know” (1934) y “Gloomy Sunday” (1936), y el segundo, “You’re My Everything” (1931), “In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town” (1932), “Lullaby of the Leaves” (1932) y “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” (1935).
